Cloud deployment strategies are often categorized either as Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS); the categorization describes how much of the software componentry (or ‘stack’) is managed by the vendor vs. how much of the stack is the responsibility for the customer to manage.

PaaS builds on IaaS to further include managed middleware, such as application servers, database management systems, etc. SaaS extends this stack to also incorporate the application layer.
