BI for PaaS

PaaS Cloud image

BI for PaaS is a reporting and analytic service that can be easily built into PaaS-based applications and managed by the PaaS. It complements the balance of flexibility/ease of management that many PaaS developers find optimal. Jaspersoft provides pre-configured packages to easily integrate into your preferred PaaS environment.

Overview

Cloud deployment strategies are often categorized either as Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS); the categorization describes how much of the software componentry (or ‘stack’) is managed by the vendor vs. how much of the stack is the responsibility for the customer to manage.

IaaS typically provides managed networking, servers, storage, platform virtualization, and operating system environments. PaaS builds on IaaS to further include managed middleware, such as application servers, database management systems, etc. SaaS extends this stack to also incorporate the application layer.

With the managed middleware included in the PaaS environment, PaaS offerings enable developers to rapidly deploy their applications to the cloud, automatically scale them as usage grows, easily manage them, and focus their efforts on application development.

As shown in the diagram below, PaaS can provide more flexibility and choice than a packaged SaaS solution, but requires less administration than IaaS, thus reducing the management burden of both the hardware and the middleware of your IT infrastructure. Because Jaspersoft is based on the same standards as those used in leading PaaS platforms, Jaspersoft provides an open solution to easily deploy your BI applications to the cloud.

Cloudfoundry by VMWare

VMware Cloud Foundry is an open PaaS, providing a choice of clouds, developer frameworks and application services. Initiated by VMware, with broad industry support, Cloud Foundry makes it faster and easier to build, test, deploy and scale applications. It is an open source project and is available through a variety of private cloud distributions and public cloud instances, including CloudFoundry.com.

Red Hat OpenShift redefines the PaaS market by providing a new level of choice in languages, frameworks, and clouds for developers to build, test, run, and manage their applications. OpenShift is the first PaaS to run CDI applications and plans support for Java EE 6, extending the capabilities of PaaS to even the richest and most demanding applications. OpenShift ends the lock-in of PaaS, allowing developers to choose the cloud provider upon which their application will run.
